Classical Music For Toddlers At Home

Parents often ask me how to introduce classical music for toddlers at home. There are a wealth of different activities to be found on the Let’s Play Music site about classical music for kids which are great resources for teachers. But in this post I want to show how easy it is for anyone to can get started. All you need are some music tracks to play and a bit of space and your imagination.

So this is the first in a short series of posts with lots of ideas for how to include classical music into your daily routine. To develop a love and appreciation that will last a life time.

Before you get started you need to collect up your resources or at least have an idea of what you want to play. So spend a little time listening and researching so that you’re prepared. Children are an impatient little bunch and you’ll quickly lose their interest and attention if you keep them waiting!

These days it’s easy with the wonders of the internet, it’s possible to find and listen to almost any recorded track of anything. Not so long ago, you had to go out and buy records and tapes and build up your resources that way. But of course so much choice can be a problem in itself, in that you don’t know where to start, but help is at hand.

The following posts are full of links to youtube tracks of well known classical music that have been hand picked to be particularly suitable for children. These selections are always very difficult to narrow down, but they are an excellent place to get started. Go to the links, listen to the tracks and then you can use them as a starting point, to explore other pieces of music by the same composers or in the same style or genre.

People often ask what equipment I use for playing musical excerpts in music lessons. Of course if  you have the original CDs you can play them with a conventional music player using a remote control for stopping and starting.

But these days the easiest way is to play them straight from youtube by using your phone or ipad and some handy bluetooth speakers. Here are two really good choices; I’d recommend the Anker Soundcore for use in an average sized room, but these JBL Flip 4 speakers pack a bit more of punch if you’re in a bigger space.
