5 Best Music Activities for Kids Aged 0-5 Years

It is never too early to introduce your baby to music. These music activities for kids will hopefully give you some ideas about how to integrate music into a day to day routine. From helping with co-ordination and language skills, to cognitive development, music is an essential part of every child’s education – and great fun too! Here are my five best music activities for kids for newborns, through to reception/kindergarten age.

You don’t have to be a ‘music expert’ to do music activities with your kids at home. Anyone can have a go!

Sing musical rhymes and songs with your baby from birth as often as you can, include them in your daily routines, it makes a happy and relaxed atmosphere! Don’t worry about your singing voice either, babies really aren’t fussy and singing rhymes together is one of the best ways to interact (see our Top 10 Tunes For Toddlers for some inspiration!).

Go to a shared music group from around 9 months to a year – such fun for everyone! Most communities have music activities for kids such as rhyme time or other musical classes advertised in local libraries. It’s great for making friends and they learn so much from them.

Collect good quality percussion instruments and a xylophone or chime bars. They make great presents, and good ones last for years! Making music at home is such a lot of fun and something everyone can do together. Invite some  friends over to share your music time.

baby-music-ideasSettle your little one at night time with some lovely lullabies or other soothing music. Music really does have a wonderfully calming effect, and is reassuring and comforting at bedtime.

    I have just found your site and see many wonderful ideas to supplemental my teaching style and career. However, before I order anything, I need to know if it is the American style???

      Hi Alice, Although Let’s Play Kids Music is a UK based blog, we use US style notation for the convenience of our US readers, and we usually include the UK note names in brackets.

    this is a great blog- i am homeschooling my 4yr old/she is doing ballet, and i was looking for good resources for us to learn beat. I also really like your homepage how it has a few blogs on where to start- i have my own blog, and i have never thought of that! great idea 🙂 Thanks for sharing your knowledge/love of music.
